IYEC Stands Against Gender-Based Violence: A Look Back at the 16 Days of Activism in Limbe

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pressing human rights violations worldwide, affecting millions of women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable and marginalized communities. As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Integrated Youth Empowerment Center (IYEC) proudly participated in a march pass in Limbe, standing in solidarity with organizations, activists, and community members to raise awareness and call for urgent action against all forms of GBV.

Marching for Justice, Awareness, and Change

The 16 Days of Activism, observed annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), serves as a powerful platform to amplify voices against gender-based violence and advocate for justice and accountability. This campaign unites individuals and organizations globally to speak out, educate communities, and demand stronger policies to protect victims and survivors of GBV. The streets of Limbe came alive with passionate voices, banners, and advocacy messages, all aimed at highlighting the devastating impact of GBV and the urgent need for action. The event brought together civil society organizations, women’s rights groups, local authorities, and youth advocates, all united in the fight against violence and discrimination.

This year’s theme, “Responding and Building with the Abuse,” emphasized not only the need to address the long lasting impact of GBV but also the importance of empowering survivors to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience. The campaign highlighted the psychological, social, and economic challenges faced by survivors, underscoring the necessity for stronger policies, community-driven support systems, and sustainable solutions to help them move forward.

Key Messages from the Event

During the march and related activities, advocates delivered powerful messages focused on:

🔹 Raising awareness about the different forms of gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, sexual harassment, early and forced marriages, and economic violence.
🔹 Promoting access to justice by calling on governments and institutions to strengthen legal frameworks that protect survivors and punish perpetrators.
🔹 Encouraging survivor-centered approaches, ensuring that victims receive the necessary psychological, medical, and legal support to recover and rebuild their lives.
🔹 Challenging societal norms and harmful gender stereotypes that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women and girls.

The 2024 theme, “Responding and Building with the Abuse,” highlighted the long-term impact of gender-based violence on survivors and the need to create pathways for healing and empowerment. Survivors of GBV often face trauma, stigma, economic hardship, and limited access to justice, making it critical for communities and organizations to step in with support systems that help them rebuild their lives.

During the event, activists and community leaders called for:

🔹 Stronger legal frameworks to prosecute GBV perpetrators and protect victims.
🔹 Increased access to support services such as mental health counseling, legal aid, and shelter for survivors.
🔹 Economic empowerment initiatives that provide women with financial independence and reduce their vulnerability to violence.
🔹 Education and awareness campaigns to challenge harmful gender norms and cultural practices that perpetuate violence.

IYEC’s Commitment to Ending GBV

As an organization dedicated to empowering marginalized youth, particularly girls, IYEC plays a crucial role in the fight against gender-based violence. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, IYEC continues to:

🔹 Raise awareness about GBV through media campaigns, community workshops, and youth-led initiatives.
🔹 Empower girls with knowledge and skills to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.
🔹 Support survivors by linking them to essential services such as legal assistance, counseling, and vocational training.
🔹 Engage men and boys in conversations about gender equality, encouraging them to be allies in the fight against GBV.

During the 16 Days of Activism, IYEC reaffirmed its commitment to breaking the cycle of violence, challenging harmful stereotypes, and creating safer communities for all.

Beyond the 16 Days: A Continuous Fight for Change

While the 16 Days of Activism serves as an important platform for advocacy, the fight against gender-based violence is a year-round effort. Ending GBV requires continuous education, policy changes, and community-driven initiatives that address the root causes of violence and provide sustainable support for survivors.

IYEC calls on government institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, and individuals to take meaningful action beyond the campaign period. This includes:

✔ Implementing and enforcing stricter laws against gender-based violence.
✔ Providing safe spaces where survivors can seek help without fear of stigma or retaliation.
✔ Encouraging more men and boys to join the fight for gender equality and stand against violence.
✔ Investing in education and economic opportunities that empower women and reduce their dependence on abusive situations.

A Call to Action

The march in Limbe was a powerful reminder that the fight against GBV is far from over. While progress has been made, millions of women and girls still experience violence, discrimination, and inequality every day. It is the responsibility of governments, organizations, and individuals to take a stand, challenge harmful norms, and work towards a world free from gender-based violence.

IYEC remains dedicated to this cause and will continue to advocate for policies, programs, and initiatives that protect survivors, empower communities, and promote lasting change.

Let’s keep the conversation going, support survivors, and take real action because every girl, every woman, and every survivor deserves a life free from violence.
